24. MTB tour from San Candido to Brunico

The green colour of the meadows, fields and forests dominates on the San Candido - Brunico stage. Along the river Rienz, partly through inhabited areas and partly through unspoilt natural landscapes, the cycle path runs up and down from village to village to Brunico, the economic centre of the Pustertal Valley.

Start at the Berghotel in Sesto on the cycle path towards San Candido in the direction of Baranci/industrial area, passing the “Senfter” factory. Before the level crossing, continue straight on to the left. Now the cycle path to Dobbiaco begins. From there, continue straight ahead on the cycle path to Villabassa. Just before the campsite, cross the road and the train line via a tunnel, then cross the road again at the end of the village. Continue the cycle path to Monguelfo, from where you continue in the direction of the Valdaora reservoir. Shortly after the lake, you reach an asphalted road that runs through the entire village. From Valdaora di Sotto, the route continues to Perca. Then it goes through several tunnels to Brunico.

The return to San Candido is by train from Brunico or Brunico Nord station. The last section from San Candido to Sesto is on a cycle path.

Characteristics: The cycle tour leads along partly asphalted, partly well-prepared gravel paths across meadows and through forests. The difference in altitude of only approx. 400 meters is deceptive, as there are a few quite strenuous sections. However, most of the route is flat and almost entirely downhill from Valdaora. Less experienced cyclists or families with children have the option of travelling back by train from any of the villages in between.
