My holiday in Val Fiscalina
Mountaineering actor, national hero: he was a famous role model. According to Luis Trenker, the Berghotel is "... in the most beautiful place, in the world's most beautiful valley". He was of course talking about the Val Fiscalina.
Stretching for 4.5 kilometres, it's a place of great beauty and genuine mountain life, both in summer and in winter. Our valley is the perfect answer for families and mountain lovers looking for a peaceful setting; there are many long walks you can take in the area, including with children, pushchairs or backpacks. You can also enjoy wonderful excursions in winter-time.
There's plenty to satisfy keen mountaineers. The Berghotel is right at the entrance to the Val Fiscalina and the ideal starting point for hiking and climbing in the Tre Cime area and the Sesto Dolomites. In winter, you can go on long snowshoe hikes, ski along cross-country trails or enjoy ski mountaineering trips.
The larch forests are a special feature here; they start right by our hotel, at the entrance to the Val Fiscalina. They really are an amazing natural spectacle at any time of year.
Many roads lead to Rome, but only one takes you into the Val Fiscalina in South Tyrol.
Coming from Lienz: follow main road E66 for Val Pusteria, and after San Candido turn left onto the SS52, towards Sesto.
From Brennero/Brunico: turn right before San Candido onto the SS52. After 6.5 km, you'll get to the Three Peaks village of Sesto.
From the centre of Sesto, take the main road to Moos (Moso). Drive past the church in Moso, and after 200 metres turn right for the Val Fiscalina.
You can park by the Croda Rossa cable car station at the entrance to the valley, or further up next to the Rifugio Piano Fiscalino.
The Berghotel really is the ideal starting point for a holiday in Val Fiscalina. We are located in Moso, right at the entrance to the valley ...
Exit the Berghotel on Via Monte Elmo, go downhill to the main road and turn left. After about 400 metres, turn right at the church into Via Heideck, then follow the road past the Kofler bakery until you come to the dirt road and the first sign. From here, follow hiking trail no. 102 towards Val Fiscalina/Rifugio Fondovalle. Alternatively, you can follow Via Heideck to the end, and then take the delightful trail no. 1 around the former Heideck Fort in Val Fiscalina. It's about 3.5 km to Rifugio Piano Fiscalino, or around a 45-minute walk.
Begin your hike through the amazing scenery of the Meridiana di Sesto (Sesto Sundial). The bus for the 3,5 km to Val Fiscalina (Piano Fiscalina hut/Dolomitenhof) leaves every half hour from beside the church in Moso (approx. 400 m away).

Your hotel for hikers A hiking holiday in South Tyrol and in the Dolomites - at the highest level.
The story of the Sesto Sundial goes back to antiquity. The ancient Romans used to count the hours from the time the sun rose. 12 noon was therefore known as the "sexta hora" (sixth hour), from which the village of Sesto probably got its name.
During the winter solstice, the sun rises at 9 o'clock in the morning above Cima Nove, at 10 above Cima Dieci, at 11 above Cima Undici, at 12 noon precisely above Cima Dodici and at 1 p.m. above Cima Una. You get the best view from the Berghotel: from our terrace, you can follow the path of the sun very closely!
Sundial of Sesto
Maybe you don't want to climb too high, but you still want some spectacular scenery? Or else you're travelling with your family, including young children and grandparents? Then the Val Fiscalina in South Tyrol is the ideal choice for your holiday! There are wide paths for pleasant walks through the valley, perfectly suitable for pushchairs, dogs, children or older people. In winter, you can have fun pulling the youngsters along on a sled, or taking a toboggan ride down the gentle slopes.
But when is the ideal time to have a holiday in Val Fiscalina? The answer is: right now! No two days are ever the same here. Whether you come in spring, summer, autumn or winter, nature has a surprise to offer you every day of the year. And even though in other parts of our region the landscape can sometimes seem a bit bleak, the extraordinary scenery of Val Fiscalina will cheer you up any time of the year!
Take the shuttle bus to Rifugio Auronzo: it’s lovely! But if you’ve got the energy, it's even better to hike up through the Val Fiscalina to the true symbol of the Dolomites: the Tre Cime. Beyond Rifugio Fondovalle, you'll find some amazing views and hiking paths into the Dolomites. Mountain lovers also come here every summer to try out the via ferrate, which come at various levels of difficulty, from simple to very hard. For those who prefer to take it easy, there are many hiking trails at lower levels. Maps and mountain sports equipment are available at the Berghotel.
The Val Fiscalina is a joy in winter too, with special hiking trails that are well-marked and safe for the whole family. You can go hiking with snowshoes, on hire at the Berghotel. We'll be happy to advise you about the best cross-country ski trails and ski mountaineering trips. The snowy peaks of the Meridiana di Sesto provide a perfect background for your winter holiday in Val Fiscalina.
This is our top tip for winter, whether you want a romantic ride with your partner or a fun afternoon out in the snow with your children. The meeting point is Sesto riding school, the trip takes about 2 hours and you have to book in advance. Enjoy a horse-drawn sleigh ride through the snow-covered Val Fiscalina! You can go on a similar outing in summer, but this time in a horse-drawn carriage.
