31. LAGO SORAPIS

Description of the way:

From the Berghotel we take the car to Passo Tre Croci, where we start our hike. We walk along trail no. 215, a varied panoramic trail, through the forests of the Orti di Marcoira. The path leads us southwards without any significant difference in altitude until we reach the valley basin of the Rio Sorapis.

Now comes the more strenuous part of the hike: a short section with iron stairs and some exposed passages secured with a steel rope. Caution is advised here, as there is an increased risk of slipping, especially if the trail is wet or crowded.

We continue along trail no. 215 and finally reach the famous turquoise Lago di Sorapis. At the Vandelli hut you have the option of stopping for a bite to eat and enjoying the surrounding mountain scenery.

The descent back to the starting point follows the same trail no. 215.

Advices:

This hike is one of the most beautiful in the Dolomite Mountains. The lake is known for its intense turquoise colour, which is caused by fine rock dust coming from the glacier of the same name. The lake is fed by snowmelt in spring and summer, giving it its unique appearance.

The hike is very well known and a popular destination for both tourists and locals. The car park at Passo Tre Croci fills up quickly, therefore it is advisable to use the shuttle service (Dolomitibus) departing from the bus station in Cortina.
